“The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change that is the dominant factor in society today.” – Isaac Asimov. In this day and age what we need is change. Change from past leaders, from past policies. Change is what Obama ran for, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”- Barack Obama. To see the significance of change and the significance of the monument towards it we must look at who, what, when, where and why.

Who? The designer of the monument to change is the world renowned Dakota Downey. He was selected by a board of 5 judges. Dakota has 20 years of experience designing gardens; he started his work at age 20. This is his first monument designs, his previous works have been private or for botanical gardens.

This monument honors all who have affected the change of this country in a positive way. It honors Lincoln for the abolishment of slavery, to the founding fathers of our country for their hard work that made us our own country. It honors the soldiers that fought in the revolutionary war, it honors Thomas Edison for his creation of the light bulb, changing the way we light our city streets and homes. Next on the analysis is what.

What? His winning design was a garden with the shape of the West African Adinkra symbol for change.  In the center of this garden would be a statue of Obama 30 feet tall. The design of the symbol is made from concrete; it has two circles of grass and 4 gardens. In each of the gardens there is a different arrangement of flowers. Next is when.

When? Construction on the monument is scheduled to start July 10th of 2009. As of now there is not set date for the completion of the monument but it is rumored that it will be completed by the spring of 2010. This monument honors forward thinking Americans since the revolutionary war. Three out of five things done, the next topic is where.

Where?  The monument to change would be located on Northerly Island in Chicago, IL. Chicago was chosen for the location because, one, it I where President Barack Obama is from and Obama ran for change and two, because of the waterfront provided a perfect place to put a monument to change. This is because water is easy to change and is constantly changing. The last thing to look at is why.

Why? The monument to change was built because the world needs change. Change from the violence that we have seen in recent years, from the bad economy, change from bad leaders. This monument is a beginning to change. The whole design is based on change, from the shape to the statue of a man of change, a statue of Barack Obama.

“The only constant is change, continuing change, inevitable change that is the dominant factor in society today.” – Isaac Asimov. Most of the change society has seen recently is bad change. Change in relationships with countries, change in our economy for the worse. The change that we need right now is forward change. We need more people like Obama who push for change for our country, Change for the world. We can all do our parts, what will you do to change the world around you?
